The Bromley Youth Chamber Orchestra (BYCO) was formed in 1977 and operates as part of the Bromley Youth Music Trust which, in conjunction with the London Borough of Bromley, is responsible for instrumental teaching in Bromley Schools and for Youth Music in Bromley.
The BYCO regularly appears in venues such as The Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, St. John's, Smith Square, Fairfield Hall, Royal Naval College, Southwark Cathedral and the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and it has performed and broadcast in nine European Countries and in Canada.
The Orchestra has worked with many fine soloists, including Anthony Marwood, Hugh Bean, Hanna Weinmeister, Maxine Kwok (violin), Emma Johnson (clarinet), John Anderson (oboe), Philip Fowke, Lora Dimitrova (piano) and Gary Ryan (guitar) and has commissioned works by Malcolm Binney, Gareth Wood, James Olsen and Peter Wiegold.
The BYCO have been top prizewinners in the International Festival of Music for Youth in Vienna, and in 1996, 1999 and 2001 they were awarded the Outstanding Performance Award in the National Festival of Music for Youth, competing with orchestras from throughout the UK at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
Many BYCO members go on to study music at University and Conservatoires, and three present players are members of the National Youth Orchestra.
The BYCO is also a very well recorded orchestra - they have broadcast on both BBC Radio and Classic fM, and have recorded eight highly acclaimed CD's.
The BYCO often raises money for charities through its performances, and recently they have supported Chernobyl Children (Rye), Demelza House Childrens¹ Hospice, Bromley Ablement, and the Elm Road project for the London homeless.
