FRANCESCA LAURI

Francesca Lauri, born August 2000, started studying the piano when she was five with Neil Rollings. In 2009 she passed ABRSM Grade 5 Piano with 128(Merit), since then she has been extending her repertoire and waiting for her hands to grow! Francesca is currently studying for her ABRSM Grade 5 Theory, having already learned the Grade 6 syllabus, with Grade 7 to follow shortly after that.

At the age of six, Francesca made her debut in the piano concerts, organized by BYMT, playing Clementi Sonatina n2, and subsequently sonatinas by Clementi, Dussek, Sonata K 545 by Mozart, Two Parts Inventions by Bach, Twelve Variations on the theme Oh dirai -je maman by Mozart and most recently, Chopins Waltz op.64 no.2.

Francesca has taken part in 3 masterclasses held at BYMT: in 2008, with Graham Humphries, who was impressed by her left hand playing, musicality and her staccato; in 2009 with Timothy Carey, playing Bachs Two Part Inventions nos 2, 4,8,13, where he appreciated the clear distinction of the two voices and style, and 2 months ago with Philip Fowke, who described her playing very confident and stylish.

In April 2009, Francesca took part in a piano orchestra workshop at St Lukes Centre, London, organized by the London Symphony Orchestra, with a guest appearance from the well-known international pianist Lang Lang, playing Schuberts March Militaire. Later, Lang Lang gave her a private lesson on Mozarts Twelve Variations on the theme Oh dirai-je maman, lasting for almost an hour.

In March 2010, Francesca was the featured soloist in a concert in St. James, Beckenham with the Beckenham Youth Voices.

In the autumn of 2009, her first ever piano competition, Francesca was awarded 2nd place in 4 categories at the Beckenham Music Festival. In May this year, she was awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in three classes at the Blackheath Festival. In both competitions she entered the Open class where her closest competitor, in age, was at least 20 years her senior and came 2nd both times!

This term she has had her first experience of chamber music, teaming up with Ella Shaxson (violin) and Alex Lau (cello), students from BYMT, to form a piano trio playing movements from Mozarts Sonata in F K36 and Frank Bridges Miniatures, making their debut last month at the string departments chamber music concert.

Francesca actively takes part in various music activities at her school, Hayes Primary School, where she accompanies the orchestra, the choirs and some students in the school concerts. She also sings in both the school choirs.

Her repertoire includes:
Clementi: Preludes and Exercises
Czerny: Selected Studies
