AUTUMN TERM DATES:
Thur 13 September, Thur 4 October, Thur 18 October, Thur 1 November, Thur 15 November, Thur 29 November.
Is jazz a bit of a mystery to you? Do you wish to understand and appreciate it more? Do you like some styles of jazz, but find other styles a complete enigma? Maybe you are learning to play jazz and would like to broaden your knowledge. Maybe you are a keen audience member of jazz concerts and would like to understand more about what the musicians are doing on the stage.
If so then come join this fun study group which will involve a mixture of listening, analysis and discussion. We will be looking at significant recordings by some of the great jazz artists of the 20th century and putting them in to context through exploring what it was that made them and the artists that created them so important within the overall evolution of this music.
Session 1: Miles Davis “So What” - Kind of Blue (Legacy Edition) 1959
Session 2: Dave Brubeck “Blue Rondo A La Turk” - Time Out 1959
Session 3: Charlie Parker “Koko” - Best of The Complete Savoy & Dial Studio Recordings
Session 4: Ornette Coleman “Congeniality” - The Shape of Jazz To Come 1959
Session 5: Duke Ellington "Black Brown & Beige" featuring Mahalia Jackson 1958
Session 6: Charles Mingus “Fables of Faubus” - Ah Um 1959
The participant is expected to listen to each entire album before attending the relevant class, but due to the time constraints of each session we will focus on the particular tracks indicated.
