Jazz School Promo Video
Our jazz school promo video is now online, do check it out (link below). Please share it so we can spread the word and promote the jazz school as much as possible.
New “Blue Note Band”
The shift of time allows us to run a new jazz ensemble. The “Blue Note Band” will be run by Mr Buster Birch & Mr Steve Buckley and rehearse from 6:50pm - 7:20pm every week. This new band will replace the previous “Junior Jazz Band” taken by Mrs Kingscott. The purpose of this session will be to rehearse and prepare for the up-coming concert at The London Jazz Festival (see below). It is not compulsory to attend this class, but it is mandatory for those who want to perform at the Jazz Festival. Having the two sessions back-to-back allows us to be more inclusive and spend time exploring general improvisation techniques in the workshop session, then use the new Blue Note Band rehearsal to work on the arrangements for the up-coming performance.
Members of the Blue Note Band must also attend the Blue Note Workshop.
ARQ at the London Jazz Festival
Friday 15 November 7:30pm at Kings Place (N1 9AG)
ARQ (the Alison Rayner Quintet) featured at our BYMT Jazz Day in June 2019 with a fantastic afternoon workshop and evening concert. They are also playing at the London Jazz Festival this year and we have been able to secure a number of free tickets for Jazz School students (with parent chaperones as well). We all will meet at the venue at 7pm. If you are not able to bring your child, please do let us know so we can make the necessary arrangement for the safe transportation of your child from Orpington station to London King’s Cross, and then back.
Please contact the office for more information.
London Jazz Festival (November)
Saturday 23 November 12:00pm at the Royal Festival Hall “Clore Ballroom”
The Blue Note Band and The Birdland Group will perform a 30 minute set as part of this year’s official London Jazz Festival. The event is free admission and friends and family are invited to attend. Participants will need to make their own travel arrangements to the venue (details will follow). We expect back line to be provided (piano, amps, drums).
Please Email firstname.lastname@example.org and confirm that your child is able to attend this concert.
Jazz School core text study books coming soon
This summer the first two books in my “Beginner Jazz Soloing” series were published in print on Amazon, by Fundamental-Changes, one of the UK’s biggest music publishers. One book is for saxophone & clarinet and the other book is for trumpet. They feature much of the methods and techniques we have been working on at Jazz School. These are fantastic practice resources for jazz school students and should be considered core texts. They include 153 free audio downloads to practice along with. These books retail at £12.99 on Amazon but I have managed to secure a discount with the publisher and also have received a generous donation from a private sponsor to subsidise the cost of the books for you, which means we will have a limited number of books to offer you at £5.00 each.
