60th Birthday Piano Recital

Wednesday 9th May 2018, 7.30pm

Maxim Rowlands was born in Chester in 1958 and had moved to Dorchester when he started piano lessons at the Dorset School of Music in 1964. His piano teachers there included Pauline Sefton-Smith and Harold Durrant. In 1971 Maxim won a music scholarship to Bryanston School to study with Prabhu Singh. In 1973 Maxim became a pupil of James Gibb in London and continued as his student at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1975 where he also had piano lessons with Paul Berkowitz. Whilst studying for a M.Mus degree in Performance & Related Studies at Goldsmiths' College, London (where Maxim was a lecturer from 1983 to 1993)he was taught by Peter Wallfisch.

In 1978 Maxim became an accompanist with Live Music Now! In 1979 he was appointed as a visiting piano teacher at Sydenham High School GDT. Since then he has combined a career as a musician in education with recitals, concerts and freelance piano playing. Maxim has been based in Bromley since 1994 where he was Head of Keyboard Studies with Bromley Youth Music Trust for ten years and is now a licensed piano teacher. He has also been an accompanist at the Royal College of Music since 2003 and a piano tutor and accompanist at Centre for Young Musicians, London since 1988.

Maxim has a broad range of musical interests and divides his energies between solo piano recitals, chamber music, accompanying, and music education. He has also performed concertos and has experience of radio, television, orchestral and theatre work. As a result of extensive experience as an accompanist he is familiar with the concert repertoire of most orchestral instruments and with a wide-ranging vocal repertoire compassing Lieder, opera music and songs from shows and the charts. This is combined with an ability to play at sight, by ear and from memory (not necessarily all three at the same time) and he is comfortable with most aspects of piano playing.

“I remember Jimmie (James Gibb –Max’s teacher in the GSMD) saying that he is a pupil of Mabel Lander who was taught by Theodor Leschetizky who was taught by Karl Czerny who was a pupil of Ludwig Van Beethoven. This means that our pupils are "descended" from Beethoven. This is something worth thinking about!”

Max Rowlands has an encyclopaedic knowledge of music which he is always ready to generously share with his colleagues, and disperse among his students. But there is much more to him then just that - he is also a very warm-hearted, respectful and kind human being.
