Jazz School

BYMT JAZZ SCHOOL offers training to any junior and secondary school children in Bromley on any instrument (of grade 3 standard and above) in jazz composition and improvisation through playing and studying jazz repertoire.

BLUE NOTE GROUP ~ for those new to the essential requirements of Jazz including improvisation and composition.

BIRDLAND GROUP ~ for young musicians who are more confident jazz performers but want to develop their skills, harmonic understanding and vocabulary further.

BYMT Jazz School takes place on Alternate Thursdays during term time.

BLUE NOTE GROUP ~ 5.00-6.15pm / BIRDLAND GROUP ~ 6.30-7.45pm.

AUTUMN Term 2018 dates:

13 September, 4 October, 18 October, 1 November, 15 November, 29 November

There is a fee of £42 for these 6 sessions.

BYMT Big Band Members attend free of charge.

Blue Note Group (Junior Jazz School)
Students will learn to improvise melodic phrases with the notes and scales given.

Requirements for joining
In order to have a satisfactory experience and get the most from the class, before joining the students should ideally…
know where all of the notes are on their instrument
be able to play a chromatic scale across most of the written range of their instrument.
know most of the intervals within an octave
know most of the major scales
be able to read any pitch across the range of the treble clef (bass clef for bass players, both clefs for pianists)
be able to read rhythms including crotchet, quaver notes/rests

What will be covered in the sessions
Intervals and construction of a scale
Minor Pentatonic scales in different keys (iBook now available)
Major Pentatonic scales
Blues Scale
Q&A phrasing
Using more than one scale in a sequence
Different musical forms (12 bar blues, AABA, 16bar)
Different feels (Latin, swing, straight 8s, funky)
Different Jazz Styles (modern, swing, Latin)

Repertoire 
Sonnymoon For Two, Mack The Knife, Little Sunflower, Afro Blue, Centerpiece, Freddie Freeloader, So What, Cantaloupe Island 

Birdland Group (Senior Jazz School)
Students will learn to chose their notes to use for improvising. 

Requirements for joining
In order to have a satisfactory experience and get the most from the class, before joining the students should ideally…
be familiar with everything covered in the Blue Note Group Sessions and also…
understand the transposition of their instrument
know the major scales in all 12 keys
know major and minor triads/arpeggios in all 12 keys
be able to read rhythms including crotchet, quaver, semiquaver notes/rests and quaver triplets

What will be covered in the sessions
Modes of the Major Scale, Chord Symbols (four most common), Chord Tones, Voice Leadings, Licks, II-V-I, Diatonic harmony, Rhythm Changes, More feels (2 feel, 4 feel, Double Time Feel), Different styles of jazz (ECM, Fusion, Free Jazz, Modal)

Blue Monk, Autumn Leaves, I Got Rhythm, Lester Leaps In, One Note Samba, Unsquare Dance, Honeysuckle Rose, Sister Sadie, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore, St Thomas, Milestones
