Lead Tutor (BYMT North West Music Centre)

Job Description

To be responsible for the day-to-day management of the music centre; working closely with the teaching team, Heads of Department and Senior Leadership Team to support all teaching; actively supporting the promotion of its work to parents and the wider community.  


Bromley Youth Music Trust (BYMT) is one of the leading music services in the United Kingdom, reaching over 18,000 children and young people in the London Borough of Bromley and beyond. As lead partner of Bromley Music Education Hub, the Trust provides an exceptional music education experience of the highest quality in a widening range of genres and is open to all children regardless of their financial support. Our motto is “Music Changes Lives” and our vision is to positively change more lives through high quality teaching and infrastructure. 

On Saturday mornings during term-time over 500 children attend BYMT Centres across the borough to participate in Bands, Orchestras, Rock Schools, Piano Ensembles and BYMT NW. 

BYMT NW is a Saturday morning music centre based in Anerley at James Dixon Primary School. It currently provides instrumental and ensemble tuition to 55 children through a carousel timetable. We have exciting plans to develop the centre, including the launch of a new midweek programme, 

Line Management responsibilities 

Supervision of teaching team and pastoral assistant

Reports to: Deputy Principal 




Saturday sessional rate (£100 per session) Additional admin hours available



  • ensure that the BYMT Safeguarding Policy is followed in your role as a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead 

  • to provide a safe environment in which children can learn 

  • to identify children that may need additional help 


  • depending on your teaching specialism(s), you will be required to teach a variety of instrumental small group lessons and direct ensembles/choirs 

 (Lessons and ensembles)  

  • timetable administration of music centre lessons, communicating with parents, ensuring that records are accurate and encouraging increased centre membership 

  • ensuring that accurate registers are maintained  

  • ensuring that BYMT’s policy regarding minimum ensemble sizes is applied effectively  

 (Events, concerts,)   

  • leading on the planning of centre performances, liaising regularly with the Deputy Principals   

  • ensuring the music centre information on the BYMT website is up to date  

  • ensuring that risk assessments are written for performances and trips  


  • working in partnership with Deputy Principals to ensure that volunteers are engaged and supported as per the BYMT volunteer policy 

 (BYMT Communication) 

  • cultivate relationships with BYMT families 

  • manage queries with professionalism, ensuring that any messages are immediately dealt with or forwarded to the appropriate member of staff 

  • assist with promoting BYMT’s social networking presence (including Facebook and Twitter groups/pages) 

 (Resources and facilities)   

  • oversee the collection of centre instruments  

  • liaise with BYMT colleagues to maximise resources   

  • to work in close partnership with the Facilities Manager on site and demonstrate flexibility in all matters relating to use of shared premises and resources   

  • to liaise with the Deputy Principal in ensuring that the centre delivers within budget 

 (Health and safety)   

  • to liaise with the Deputy Principal to ensure that the BYMT fire evacuation procedures/drills are followed  

  • to review the termly risk assessment for the centre 

 (Meetings and training)   

  • to attend occasional meetings with the BYMT SMT/SLT 

  • to attend training that is relevant to professional development  

  • to encourage students, staff and colleagues to abide by the BYMT Code of Conduct and lead by example   

  • to undertake any other duties commensurate with this post that may be assigned by the CEO/Head of Service   


  • to contribute to the strategic development plans for the centre 


Required Qualifications:

Qualified or suitably experienced vocal/instrumental teacher (E)

 Proficient on a number of instruments (D)

 Experience of directing ensembles and/or choirs (D)

 Experience of delivering whole class ensemble tuition or curriculum music (D)

 Experience of leading a music centre (D)

 Able to manage time efficiently and effectively meet deadlines (E)  

 Good numeracy and literacy skills (E)

 Good IT skills and able to adapt quickly to new software  (D)

 Ability to communicate effectively and to a high standard  (E)

 Able to work collaboratively with colleagues (E)

 Ability to work independently (E)

 Accuracy and strong attention to detail (E)
